In recent years innovation in technology has compressed the world into a pocket-sized edition with everything at our finger tips. Several publishing houses have undergone a paradigm shift, offering a tsunami of e-books on every topic. Given our digital accessibility, the question arises, why would we want to burden our children with big trolley bags, full of books, when all the information is already available at the click of a mouse? Also with modern pedagogical practices such as flipped classrooms and project-based learning, a single textbook is barely sufficient to prepare students with the relevant skill-sets to face the uncertainties of tomorrow. All this means that our schools should be gravitating towards the 21st century education, one that is embedded with science and technology. Here the teacher becomes the initiator of the education process, facilitating the creative assimilation of knowledge. But that is not the case in all places.

Textbooks are ubiquitous. They are available for almost every conceivable subdiscipline of biology, and few of us would consider teaching a course without using a textbook. Over the years, they have become more colorful, more encyclopedic, and accompanied by more ancillary materials such as CD-ROMs, study guides, and websites.

The students in my general chemistry class almost never open their textbook. My reason: The less I use the book, the more they learn. While some textbooks are excellent, most bore my students and frustrate me. Since textbooks are marketed nationally, they must comply with content standards for all states, resulting in ten-pound tomes that cover all topics superficially. Many promulgate scientific misconceptions or even outright errors. They present ideas didactically as discrete facts to be accepted, rather than as clues of principles to be discovered and explored. Some textbooks do a fabulous job of making science relevant, but others insult students' intelligence by oversimplifying and fragmenting the subject matter so much that it becomes incomprehensible.

  1. That breaks my heart, because history is all about studying the things that people were passionate enough to fight for and change. Social studies instruction should challenge students to think about the events that have made our world the way it is: the lessons should be so engaging and interactive that no child could ever find it boring. 💪
